GeoTHERM 2027: Three guest countries to mark the anniversary – International geothermal expertise comes together in Offenburg

On 25 and 26 February 2027, GeoTHERM will highlight its international focus. With Iceland, Scotland and France, no fewer than three guest countries will be showcasing their expertise at the upcoming event.
In its 20th anniversary year, GeoTHERM is thus consolidating its role as the central platform for cross-border exchange on current developments, technologies and projects in the field of geothermal energy.
Guest country Scotland brings new perspectives
Scottish Enterprise, based in Glasgow, promotes research into and the use of geothermal energy, particularly the innovative use of mine water (Mine Water Geothermal) for green heating networks. Mine Water Geothermal is considered particularly promising in Scotland’s Central Belt: heat from flooded former mines can be harnessed using heat pumps for local and district heating networks. Research and pilot projects, including those in Glasgow and Aberdeen, aim to further unlock the potential of these technologies.
Scotland is increasingly relying on geothermal energy as part of the heating transition. In addition to the use of warm water from disused coal mines, the focus is also on, amongst other things, the geothermal potential of deep crystalline rock.
France strengthens cross-border exchange
France, which last hosted GeoTHERM in 2013, will be represented in 2027 by the A.F.P.G. – Association Française des Professionnels de la Géothermie from Paris. The A.F.P.G. brings together and connects stakeholders in the French geothermal industry, provides information on the potential of this form of energy generation, supports political and regulatory processes, and promotes the industry’s visibility both at home and abroad.
Precisely because of its close proximity to the French geothermal market, cross-border exchange plays a particularly important role for GeoTHERM in Offenburg.
Iceland returns to Offenburg
In a landscape shaped by fire and ice, the power of the Earth’s interior has been consistently harnessed as an energy source for decades. Geothermal energy is a key component of Iceland’s energy supply and makes the country an internationally recognised pioneer in the use of renewable geothermal energy.
Thanks to this specialist expertise, Iceland will once again be represented as a guest country at GeoTHERM in Offenburg next year. The country will be represented by the ORKIS Energy Cluster Iceland from Reykjavík, which brings together companies, research institutions and other stakeholders in the Icelandic energy sector and promotes collaboration and innovation.
At GeoTHERM, Iceland will contribute its long-standing expertise and innovative solutions to the international professional exchange, thereby providing important impetus for the further development of geothermal energy.
International impetus right from the start
The three guest countries will also be prominently represented in the conference programme. High-profile speakers from the energy sectors of Iceland, Scotland and France will take part in the opening session of GeoTHERM as early as Thursday, 25 February 2027.
In doing so, GeoTHERM is sending a clear signal in favour of international cooperation and knowledge transfer. Different perspectives, framework conditions and approaches will come together in Offenburg, providing important impetus for the further development of the geothermal industry.
