Hosted by the Support Unit for IWG Geothermal (SU-DG-IWG), this is the second geothermal Roundtable, the first having been convened in Leiden back in 2019. Since then, the need to develop the geothermal sector further has become even more apparent and our community needs to press on towards Europe’s sustainable energy goals. This Roundtable aims to inform and coordinate the activities of the multiple different actors involved in geothermal, and hopefully shape the role of geothermal in the energy transition.

The IWG Geothermal has since its inception broadened the focus beyond the technical and set its sights on four key areas that underpin the strength of geothermal and its contribution to the energy transition: Heating & Cooling, Power Production, Thermal Storage and Geothermal Minerals. 

These areas will guide the discussion.

"Heat pumps have a key role to play in achieving the climate targets in the building sector. However, the market growth to date has mainly been driven by heat pumps with air as the heat source. Ground source heat pumps have hardly been able to participate in the strong market growth so far, although they are considered the premium solution for heating and cooling with heat pumps.  This short study was prepared by Fraunhofer IEG on behalf of BVG & BWP and the Bavarian Geothermal Energy Association. The study analyses the status and potential of ground-coupled heat pumps in Germany. Recommendations for action to improve the regulatory framework are derived from the description of current barriers. "

As  the  impacts  of  climate  change  continue  to  increase  worldwide,  the  conversion  of energy supply to renewable energy sources becomes more urgent than ever. Not only electricity and heat but also the mobility sector represent key factors in that context. Along with the decarbonization of the automotive industry, the demand of lithium has increased significantly over time, due to its application  in  lithium-ion-batteries.  Currently,  the  extraction  of  lithium  from  geothermal brines  is researched in many places within Europe. Thereby, deep geothermal waters are associated with high 
salinity and mineralization and may contain high concentrations of dissolved lithium between 125 to 480  mg/L.  The production  of  sustainable  lithium  from  geothermal  waters  within  Central  Europe therefore offers the chance to make a valuable contribution to achieving global climate goals. 

Various methods are available for lithium extraction from geothermal water, referred to as “direct lithium extraction (DLE) processes”. In this regard, this session will address the different technical approaches of  lithium  extraction  from  geothermal brines  as  well  as the  subsequent  processing  of lithium after DLE. Participants of several R&D pilot projects in Germany, France and the UK will provide insights into the scientific and technical aspects and challenges.

The challenges of the new heat pump era - tips & tricks for installers, planners and heat pump technicians from practice for practice: 
A workshop based on more than 2000 implemented and accompanied projects on topics such as.

  • Heating load & heat output - Heat pump selection
  • Dimensioning of source & sink
  • Efficient hydraulics - high flow versus low flow
  • how to get a warm bath
  • System parameterisation, optimisation & maintenance
  • Selection and adjustment of heat transfer fluids. 

According to current surveys, only about 10% of installers are experienced and specialised in dealing with heat pumps. The workshop will provide answers to the following questions: How do I close the gap between theoretical design and optimal implementation in practice? How do I avoid oversizing and cycling the heat pump? How do the hydraulics work in low-temperature systems? What does the ideal heat sink look like? What information can I gain from monitoring? How does the heat transfer fluid influence the efficiency of the heat pump? 
The workshop leader Arne Komposch is the managing director of RGK e.U. and has many years of experience in the field of collector systems and heat pumps and their optimisation. He works for the association Wärmepumpe Austria and the Austrian Institute of Technology as a trainer in the training for certified heat pump installers and planners.
