The International Symposium on Underground Thermal Energy Storage (UTES) Storage is key! Start now!, scheduled for 28.02.2024 at the Messe Offenburg-Ortenau, offers an exceptional platform for participants to gain insights into the current developments in underground thermal energy storage. This event is an IEA Geothermal and GEOTHERMICA Initiative providing an excellent opportunity to engage with experts across various aspects of thermal storage technology. Don’t miss the networking possibilities in the evening after the symposium.

With the rapid expansion of renewable energies, energy storage on various time scales is of particular importance in robust and resilient energy systems. Underground heat storage systems have a very large capacity compared to tanks above ground. Therefore, they are ideally suited for the conservation of surplus energy generated during periods of abundance, such as in the summer, to be utilized during periods of energy production deficits, such as in the winter.

The symposium will address Underground Heat storage systems (UTES) in its various forms, such as ATES, Aquifer storage systems, BTES, Borehole thermal energy storage, MTES Mine water thermal energy storage, PTES, Pit thermal energy storage and others.

More information on the programme will follow soon.

You can register for this 1 day event, scheduled to occur one day prior to the main GEOTHERM 2024 events, use this link:

13th German Geological Congress

In 2024, the BDG will celebrate its 40th anniversary. The BDG will celebrate this festive occasion as part of the 13th German Geology Day at the Offenbueg-Ortenau Exhibition Center. To mark the anniversary, the motto of the event is:

"40 years of the BDG - With the geosciences into the future"

In addition to the presentation of the "Stein im Brett" award, there will be a series of lectures. We will look at the history of the BDG and its current status, but also at current and future relevant topics from the profession.

How can we best shape scientific content to different audiences?

How to deliver your talk with confidence in a compelling and memorable way?

What strategies can you use to manage stress?

In this interactive workshop, we will address the art of effective science communication through three main themes. We will first cover how to best tailor the content of your presentation to your audience and examine how to break down your research topic complexity to communicate your work in the most effective way. Second, we will practice on delivering your talk effectively and finally, we will discuss how to handle the stress that can arise from the delivery, including the challenging task of answering the audience’s questions and comments.

PracticeForum Geothermal Energy

10.00 a.m., Panoramasaal EDEKA Arena

This year's PraxisForum Erdwärme invites experts, municipal decision-makers and interested parties to Offenburg to discuss concrete solutions for heat planning as part of GeoTherm 2024. In addition to topics such as municipal heat planning, the current funding framework and new legal regulations will also be discussed. The potential for decarbonizing heating networks will be demonstrated and how heating can provide a decisive advantage in the municipal heating transition.

The PraxisForum Erdwärme will be held as a hybrid event for the first time this year: Participation in Offenburg is free of charge with a valid admission ticket for GeoTherm, online participation costs €49 (incl. VAT).
