The top 5 Companies in Geothermal Innovation of 2016

Endorsed Nominations for the European Geothermal Innovation Award Announced.

Offenburg. This year’s European Geothermal Innovation Award jury have selected the maximum number of five endorsed nominations from the nominations received. The names on the 2016 shortlist are, in alphabetical order:

  • Exergy S.p.A. (IT), for the 2-pressure-level cycle on a single-disk turbine demonstrated in Denizli Tosunlar geothermal plant.
  • Fangmann Energy Services GmbH & Co. KG (DE), for novel stimulation with acids, and related accessory developments (spacer, cement, fiberglass casing).
  • geoKOAX GmbH (DE), for the geoKOAX heat exchanger, a larger diameter BHE with high fluid volume.
  • Jaske & Wolf Verfahrenstechnik GmbH (DE), for the use of water from drawdown-wells in deep open-pit mining for a small district heating system in Bergheim, DE.
  • Turboden S.r.l. (IT), for new ORC technology to ramp down output on demand, and new smart grid technology.

Nominations for the award are assessed on grounds of originality, innovation, reliability, reduction of emissions, and improvements in energy output. The Jury will now deliberate to select an overall winner which will be announced on 25th February.

Designed as an opportunity for industry peers to acknowledge innovation, and for the most exciting ideas to be widely publicised, the European Geothermal Innovation Award is the seal of excellence applied to the most intelligent and important ideas in research and industry which will play a key role in the future development of geothermal energy.

“This year, the quality of nominations was again high, and virtually no entry was below the threshold to be considered as endorsed nomination” said Dr Burkhard Sanner, President of EGEC and member of the Jury. “However, as the maximum length of the shortlist set forth in the rules is 5 names, the jury had the difficult task to select the very best. I was somewhat surprised to see that the five companies making it on the list are from two countries only, Germany and Italy. The topics range from shallow geothermal to electric power production. As second step of its task the jury now has to agree on the final winner, to be announced during the opening ceremony of GeoTHERM 2016 in Offenburg, Germany.”

The jury for 2016 is composed of Adele Manzella (Italy), Halime Paksoy (Turkey), Ladislaus Rybach (Switzerland), Burkhard Sanner (EGEC), and Sandra Kircher (Messe Offenburg).

The European Geothermal Innovation Award is an initiative from the European Geothermal Energy Council in collaboration with Messe Offenburg, organisers of the GeoTHERM fair and congress.

Programme of the GeoTHERM – expo & congress is published

Guest of honor Turkey / Two parallel congresses addressing both shallow and deep geothermal energy / Early-Bird Tickets until 29th of January

Offenburg. In six weeks, on 25th + 26th February, Europe’s leading geothermal marketplace, the GeoTHERM welcomes the international geothermal industry. The largest event throughout the European geothermal industry is annually hosting 3500 visitors and 190 exhibiting companies, all in all from 40 countries. With the international trade fair and the two parallel congresses GeoTHERM addresses shallow and deep geothermal energy perspectives and challenges. The tenth GeoTHERM provides a stage for international high level experts and operators to discuss the latest scientific and industrial developments as well as current geothermal energy policies.

International experience and a top priority to best practice reports

The summit meeting of industry experts and associated presidents has become a tradition at the opening ceremony. In the Key Note Speech this year, Vitor Correia, President of the European Federation of Geologists, will give a speech about the importance of geothermal energy as a clean energy source in the future. The President of the German Geothermal Association, Dr. Erwin Knapek, will welcome the audience and give an overview upon the current questions of the national industry.

Besides several international and national speeches, the Exhibition Center Offenburg is proud to welcome Turkey as the guest of honor this year. In two reports, Prof. Orhan Mertoglu, President of the Turkish Geothermal Association, and  Prof. Mahmut Parlaktuna from the Middle East Technical University in Ankara, offer insights into the geothermal market development in Turkey. While Turkey has a huge geothermal energy potential and a growing energy demand at the same time, the country could cover approx. 15 % of its total energy demand with this resource. (Source: Turkish-German Chamber of Industry and Commerce).

Due to the quick development in geothermal technologies today, technical engineering questions as well as best practice reports are top priority in the programme of GeoTHERM. Such as the presentation on the development and expansion of deep geothermal energy extraction for heat supply to the city of Munich.

And reaching out into the world, a presentation will illustrate the preliminary results of a study about which geothermal potential the Gonghe basin in China holds ready for the exploration in petrothermal energy systems.

Straight on the other Rhine river side, in the Strasbourg Region, geothermal activities are currently being enforced. The cross border dialogue of the GeoTHERM with France will be intensified through the strong cooperation with the German-French Energy Network TRION.

‘I am looking forward to the close collaboration with our international and national associations and exhibitors. Due to their experience and dedication, professionals from the industry are gathering every year in Offenburg’, underlines Sandra Kircher, CEO of Exhibition Center Offenburg. Apart from the cooperation and partnership with international geothermal associations, GeoTHERM and the International Energy Agency (Technology Collaboration Programmes) have agreed on their cooperation.
